COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2

Saif labCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) - an emerging infectious disease that has resulted in a global pandemic- is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) of zoonotic origin. The faculty in CFAH includes coronavirus experts who are working to develop vaccines and diagnostics for SARS-CoV-2 and establishing small animal models to test these vaccine candidates and therapeutics. CFAH scientists are also looking at the susceptibility of livestock and wild animals to SARS-CoV-2 and determine which animal species are reservoirs for SARS-CoV-2, which will help mitigate the spread of SARS-CoV-2 into human population. Current research, which is funded by the National Cancer Institute in the National Institutes of Health, also focuses on evaluating the extent of immunological cross-reactivity between SARS-CoV-2 and other human coronaviruses associated with common colds and elucidate role of these cross-reactive antibodies in SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis and immunity.
